Background:
Jessica never knew her parents. The first memories she has of herself are from the orphanage in the city of Mountainguard. She remembers all to well the hunger, the cold, and the beatings.
She remembers all too well the stranger with the kind face that adopted her and took her away form that awful place. She remembers all too well the long journey to his house deep in the forests. She remembers all too well the tricks he made lighting up little fireballs to amuse her.
She remembers nothing from the three years she lived with him until one of his magical experiments went horribly wrong and he disappeared into another dimension.
But still, she sometimes wakes up screaming in the middle of the night when his face appears in her dreams.
Now she is adopted by the nearby village’s priest, Father Idaho, and lives with him happily. That is, except for those horrible monsters that keep attacking the village, and except for those nightmares she can’t seem to get rid of.
Jessica is in fact a latent Dream Walker – a wizard that can walk other planes in her dreams, traveling without moving, or even summon creatures from the dream world to his aid. Though she doesn’t know it, her first adopting father was a powerful wizard who performed horrible experiments on her while she slept, trying to tap into her powers.
Jessica’s nightmares and the monsters attacking the village are in fact one and the same – she is unknowingly summoning the monsters of her nightmares to the real world, where they are reeking havoc.
Father Idaho, her adopting father is too blinded by his own righteousness to see that his beloved daughter is in fact the source to the village’s trouble. And while the common townsfolk aren’t aware of this fact either, eventually they will start looking for scapegoats and Father Idaho’s icy-eyed weird adopted daughter could very well be their first target.
Personality:
As noted, Jessica is basically a frightened little girl. The years she lived with that wizard (who’s name she never even knew), made her almost phobic of magic of all kinds and sorts, and her new adopting father’s preaching against it didn’t help either.
She is terrified of her nightmares, and on subconscious level does in fact know that she is the cause of the village’s misfortune.
Appearance:
Jessica is a normal looking nine year old girl, but for her eyes. Her eyes are a perfect shade of icy blue, that seem as though they could see right through a man’s soul. Her long blond hair and silent demeanor emphasize this look, giving her an out-worldly, almost angelic, appearance.
Powers/Tactics:
As noted, Jessica is a latent Dream Walker. Without being aware of it, when she sleeps her mind travels through other dimensions. Unfortunately, when her soul returns to her body, nightmare creatures follow it back to our world, seeking to protect their new found friend.
Jessica is also somewhat empathic, and can usually sense what people really think about her. Usually, those people who hate or fear her will become targets for her nightmare’s attacks.
Notes:
Technically, Jessica might have too many points in disadvantages, but lets not be picky, right?
Campaign Use:
The players may reach the village where Jessica lives and witness one of the nightly attacks. Naturally, being the heroes that they are, they will try and rid the village of this menace. After a few nights they’ll see that monsters just keep coming back, no matter how many of them they can kill. Before soon they be forced to dig a bit deeper and then…
