Through the Never

Through the Never

All that is, was and will be
Universe much to big to see
Time and space never ending
Disturbing thoughts, questions pending
Limitations of human understanding
Too quick to criticize
Obligation to survive
We hunger to be alive

All that is, ever
Ever was
Will be ever
Twisting
Turning
Through the never

In the dark, see past our eyes
Pursuit of truth, no matter where it lies
Gazing up to the breeze of heavens
On a quest, meaning, reason
Came to be, how it begun
All alone in the family of the sun
Curiosity teasing everyone
On our home, third stone from the sun

All that is, ever
Ever was
Will be ever
Twisting
Turning
Through the never

On through the never
We must go
On through the never
Out to the
Edge of forever
We must go
On through the never
Then never comes

All that is, ever
Ever was
Will be ever
Twisting
Turning
Through the never
Never

Campaign: Beacons in the Night (Star HERO)

Background:
For millennia, they existed in secret, studied in shadow. They called themselves the Order of the Shining Light. They strove nothing but knowledge, they craved nothing but understanding. For centuries, their ways were passed from father to son, from mother to daughter. For centuries they studied sciences and lost arts way beyond the comprehension of the normal man.
Eventually, they had achieved what they had craved – a release from their physical bonds. By combining knowledge of science decades ahead of what the common man possessed and that of arts lost centuries ago, they were able to transform themselves to entities of pure thought.
Leaving the decaying Earth behind them, they set off to explore the mysteries of space. They basked in the light of a thousand suns. They studied the internal workings of black holes. They flew through fields of cosmic dust at speeds man could not even dream of.
Millennia later, after man had left Earth to rot and die behind him and set off to conquer the stars, one of them returned. After years of exploring the furthest most depths of space, he was bored. He craved new fields of learning. He found those fields with his fellow men.
For centuries, he manipulated politics, economy and culture. Always hiding behind the scenes, he shamelessly drove brother against brother, and made the bitterest of enemies make peace, in a never-ending quest for understanding the one thing he could no longer comprehend – the human nature.

Personality:
The Shine, as he is nicknamed by the few that met him (he long since abandoned his real name), is an explorer and a scholar. He exists only for the purpose of accumulating knowledge. He has no other desires, no motivations, and most important – no inhibitions.
He views himself far superior to the humans he manipulates (“meat-bags”, as he refers to them), and high above what human call “morality”. He has long since evolved beyond the need of emotion, and now, when he returned to human society to study them, he finds his own lack of emotion as a hindrance. He has since learned to analyze emotions in a cold, clinical sort of way, but he is still far from truly understanding them.

Appearance:
The Shine looks exactly like he sounds he looks – a floating ball of light. He can control his own size (it doesn’t really matter, since he has no physical body), and color but usually prefers to appear as a white sphere about the size of a human head.

Powers/Tactics:
As you can see by reading the stats above, The Shine is a point monster. Basically putting it, The Shine is pure thought, and as such – nothing is beyond his power. If he can think about it, he can do it.
The fact that he has no physical form makes him impervious to all physical attacks and/or conditions. The only thing is is vulnerable to is dark energy (the energetic equivalent of dark matter), which is hardly a household commodity, even in the distant future he exists in. He can travel at speeds not dictated by the theory of relativity, and exist forever without any nutrition or rest.
He is an extremely powerful mentalist and cannot only communicate by telepathy but also manipulate mind and matter as a puppet on a string. He can perceive things as small as single atoms, and manipulate them on that level. In short – it is beginning to seem that it was a bad idea to try and represent such a being with points.

Notes:
Point monster you say? You are quite right. Not usually my style, but The Shine should be way above the scope of the players, like a force of nature.
The Shine could easily be adapted to a fantasy campaign by making him vulnerable to magic (instead of antimatter rays) and change the FTL to dimensional travel.

Campaign Use:
The Shine should never be confronted directly. He is to remain as a mastermind manipulating the characters (and everybody else) from behind.
Alternatively, he can just exist as a folktale that warns from the dangers of endless pursuit of knowledge and the abandon of human compassion.
